Julia Barnett
Piccolo/C Flute/Alto/Bass

Admired for her rich tone and fluid technique throughout the instrument’s range flutist Julia Barnett is an active performer and teacher in  Southern California. As a soloist, she has performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and the UCLA Symphony. Her chamber experiences includes work with ensembles such as the LA Grand Ensemble, Spirati Woodwind Quintet, Coastal Winds. She has performed with orchestral ensembles including the LA Dream Orchestra, the La Grange Symphony, and is currently a member of the Midland/Odessa Symphony and Chorale as well as the Billings Symphony. She recently completed her Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in flute performance at the University of California at Los Angeles, where she studied with Sheridon Stokes.  For her Master of Music, Dr. Barnett studied with Christina Jennings at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and attended Rice University for her Bachelors Degree under the tutelage of Leone Buyse. ​

Cindy Anne Broz

Cindy Anne Broz was born and raised in Salt Lake City and began studying flute at the age of nine. Her primary teachers included members of the Utah Symphony (Erich Graf, Michael Vance, and Jane Wadsworth). Ms. Broz earned a B.A. in Flute Performance from the University of Utah. She also studied privately with Julius Baker, Claude Monteux, and Murray Panitz. While living in Utah, she performed with the Utah Opera, the Salt Lake City Chamber Orchestra, the Ballet West Orchestra, as well as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

After moving to California in 1982, Ms. Broz established a career as a free-lance musician performing as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and orchestras throughout Southern California. An active theater musician, she has played at San Diego’s leading venues including The Old Globe Theater (where she performed in the world premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods), the La Jolla Playhouse, and the San Diego Civic Center. She served as principal flutist with the California Consort Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Classics4Kids Philharmonic, and the Pacific Lyric Opera Company. Cindy is the founding member of The WindSong Consort (mixed winds/wind quintet) and Flûtes de Salon (flute quartet).
 
​Also a recitalist and presenter on the East Coast, Ms. Broz has appeared as a soloist and clinician in the Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Maine, and Washington D.C. regions, and is a frequent presenter at flute festivals and conventions for organizations including the National Flute Association, the Flute Society of Washington (Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention), the San Diego Flute Guild, the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia, and the Greater Los Angeles Flute Society.  Cindy served for many years as a board member for the San Diego Flute Guild (and was the president of this organization from 2004-2006). Cindy currently serves on the board of the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia and is the Chair/Coordinator of their annual Young Artist and Collegiate Artist Competitions.

An avid supporter of new music, Broz has given full recitals introducing major works by composers Eric Ewazen and Daniel Dorff, including Ewazen’s A Night in New Orleans (Sonatine for Solo Flute), Dorff’s Sonata (Three Lakes) for Flute and Piano, Dorff’s For Elise for Flute and Piano (all of which she commissioned). Broz, with pianist Charles Abramovic, will release an “all Ewazen and Dorff” CD on the Albany Records label. "A Song from the Heart" (the title track), includes five works written for her and five first recordings. Cindy recently commissioned celebrated composer Samuel Zyman to write a new work dedicated to the memory of her mother, Nancy Aline Strong (1934-1985). Broz and Zyman gave the world premiere of
 this beautiful work (Canción de Cuna for Flute and Piano) at the 2019 National Flute Association Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also a co-commissioner of Amanda Harberg’s Court Dances (Suite for Flute and Piano) and James Stephenson’s Sonata for Piccolo and Piano.

Cindy has written articles for Flute Talk Magazine, Flutist Quarterly, and many other publications. In 2007 he was the subject of a full-length article in Flute Talk Magazine. Her articles on practice techniques, college audition preparation, and studio management and teaching have been published in newsletters across the US and abroad. Several of her articles have been adopted as curriculum for university music programs. She is a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). Her flute and clarinet edition of A Treasury of Puccini Duets: 8 Favorite Arias is published by Theodore Presser Company and received the J.W. Pepper "Editor's Choice Distinction.” 

Tracy Goodwin

Tracy Goodwin leads an active career in both teaching and performing. She is currently teaching music at elementary schools in La Jolla and Pacific Beach, and she also has an active private teaching studio. Some of her previous educator highlights include her positions as Band Director at the San Francisco Day School and the Flute Instructor at the American Indian Public Charter School.  Ms. Goodwin received her Professional Studies Diploma and BM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied with Tim Day (Principal Flutist of the San Francisco Symphony); and also did work for her MM at UCSB where she studied with renowned flute soloist/educator, Jill Felber.  While living in the Bay Area, Ms. Goodwin was fortunate to have had the opportunity to perform in concert with amazing musical talents such as rock legend Sting, renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and trumpeter Chris Botti. Tracy serves on the board of the San Diego Flute Guild, and performs regularly with the La Jolla Symphony.


Alina Freiman Steele

Alina Freiman Steele (M.M.) moved to San Diego in 2015 from New York City, where she was an active performer with groups such as Camerata NY, Greenwich Village Orchestra, Doctor’s Orchestral Society, Brooklyn Symphony, and Utopia Opera. A member of the MTAC Music Teachers' Association of California,  she is also on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Flute Guild. Very fortunate to have studied with some of the most highly regarded flutists of our time,  her principal flute teachers have included Linda Chesis, Mary Stolper, and Robert Dick. Alina continues to be an active performer in chamber and orchestral settings, and enjoys teaching flute and directing the San Diego Flute Academy. Alina is also a sought-after sound engineer. She specializes in post production audio for video and her work has been heard on Showtime, HBO, CBS, CBS Sports Network, and ESPN. In addition to sound design, mixing, and original music composition, she has recorded audio for many celebrities for radio and television.


Cathy Blickenstaff

Cathy Blickenstaff holds a Masters Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Colorado where she studied with Maralyn Prestia. She has been a participant in the Aspen Music Festival and has studied with several world-renowned flutists including Julius Baker, William Bennett, and Sylvia Greenfield. Concert appearances include: The Merc Classical Music Series, Palomar College, orchestra pit musician for Pacific Lyric Association, concertos in Oakland, California, and Beaver Creek, Colorado; the La Jolla United Methodist Church Family Concert Series, Point Loma Nazarene University Music Series, the Music Recital Series at Southwestern College, the Christ Lutheran Church Concert Series, UCSD Soiree for Music Lovers, Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Concert Series, and the First Baptist Church of San Diego Concert Series. Cathy is an active free-lancer, runs a private teaching studio, and can be heard on two CDs by Vail recording artists and one locally in San Diego. She was the flute professor at Point Loma Nazarene University for 9 years. Cathy is a member of Flûtes de Salon, the woodwind quintet WW5, and the flute, harp and viola trio, Arpavioluta. Cathy frequently works as an instrumental editor for the Neil A. Kjos Music Publishing Company.


Though Southern California based, Les Flûtes de Salon performs and presents with guest flutists in festivals, concerts, and recitals throughout the United States and abroad.
